Air Museum Visit
The Ash u3a Science & Technology Group visited Farnborough Air Sciences Trust on 4th August and came away impressed by the World Class aeronautical science that has emanated from humble beginnings at the Farnborough Royal Aircraft Establishment.
We were treated to a simulated activation of the full size replica of Samuel Cody’s British Army Aeroplane No.1A and a cockpit experience in part of a fully restored original Trident jet aircraft!
We learnt that Samuel Cody was no relation to Wild Bill Cody a.k.a “Buffaloe Bill” – Samuel just wanted to be another flamboyant showman like Buffaloe Bill!
We also learnt that Miss Tilly Shilling, the renowned inventor of a device to make Spitfire engines more reliable in dog fights (a pub in Farnborough is named after her), only agreed to marry her boyfriend if he could emulate her and ride a motorcycle around Brooklands Racetrack at over 100mph!
