Bringing People Together

Em & Me

The reading group have been meeting for more than 17 years, and for most of those Sandra had been the Group Leader. She recently passed the keys to the library to Jenny, who invited me along to see them all.

I had been given the details of the book they would be reading, and after a visit to eBay could join in the discussion.

Responses to the book were mixed. The majority of the group found it an enjoyable read; a positive, uplifting story. They enjoyed charting the progress of the main character and felt that the characters were on the whole interesting and well-drawn. Others found it a rather superficial story with no great depth to it and couldn’t empathise with the protagonist. Some members used their knowledge of French to advantage whilst some of us needed to reach for the French dictionary to fully appreciate some of the humour.

After an interesting discussion about some of the themes the book dealt with and our thoughts on the impact of these on our lives Sandra was presented with some flowers as a thank you for looking after the group for those 17 years.

Thanks to Pam for your hospitality and to the group for making me feel welcome.

I am looking forward to reading what they think about the next book – The Safekeep by Yael Vandewouden
