Abinger Ramble
In ideal conditions the Ash u3a Ramblers assembled at the Abinger Roughs car park for an exploration of the North Downs AONB.

The 5.3ml trail followed a circular clockwise route – see below:

We ascended the greensand ridges through the Wotton Estate past the church of St John the Evangelist, notable as the burial place within the chapel of diarist John Evelyn, who died in 1706.

We carried on through the bluebell woods to the halfway stop at a bridge over the source of the Tillingbourne stream:

Then we climbed up to Abinger Common where we resisted the temptations of the hostelry but admired St James’ church which at around 178 metres above sea level is the third highest of the ancient churches of Surrey and dates from Saxon times.

We then had glorious views of the North Downs on the descent from Abinger Common back to the start.
