NGS Local Garden Well Worth a Visit

From 11.00am until 4.00am

26 Lower Newport Road Aldershot Hampshire GU12 4QD

Cost: £3,00 Children free

A T-shaped small town garden full of ideas, split into four distinct sections; a semi-enclosed patio area with pots and water feature; a free-form lawn with a tree fern, perennials, bulbs and shrubs and 200 varieties of hosta; secret garden with a 20ft x 6ft raised pond, exotic planting backdrop and African carvings; and a potager garden with vegetables, roses, cannas and plant storage and sales.

The patio area pots are planted with a mix of agapanthus, exotic plants, acers and small trees whilst the house and surrounding trellis are covered by a white wisteria, with a Trachelospermum jasminoides and clematis weaving through it
Walking through the pergola into the central section of the garden a free form lawn is surrounded by beds of hardy perennials, shrubs and bulbs including a tree lillium, whilst a 2m high dicksonia draws your eye through the vertical railway sleepers and steel tubes that cut a swath across the centre of this area.

Turning left through a second pergola you enter the 8m x 15m Potager Garden with its recycled timber cloister supporting two grapevines and enclosing seasonal vegetables and roses. This is very much the engine room of the garden where we have our greenhouse, grow vegetables, hold spare plants, and house our dahlias, cannas and ricinus and the potting bench made from recycled fence posts.

Finally, via entrance through the Gardeners Arms Workshop, you enter the Secret Garden, a
secluded 8m x 10m oasis, where a 2m x 6m pond filled with Coy Carp and goldfish, and jetty,
constructed from railway sleepers, is dominant with a backdrop of, and surrounded by, exotic plants and African carvings and sculpture. On a hot day you can physically feel the temperature drop in the secret garden and it is a lovely place to chill with a cake and some coffee.
Light refreshments. Refreshments include tea, coffee, squash and home-made cakes in aid of Phylis Tuckwell Hospice.
