The Manor House Church St, Upton Grey, Basingstoke RG25 2RD

Garden Visits

The Manor House, Upton Grey (16miles 35 minutes)

At Meet at the car park opposite Victoria Hall Ash Hill Road 10.00am

The Manor House Church St, Upton Grey, Basingstoke RG25 2RD

Cost: £8 or Using your 2-for-1 card

The 15th century Manor House was altered by Ernest Newton in 1903-1905 for Charles Holme, founder of the leading Arts and Crafts magazine The Studio. The garden was designed and planted in 1908 and 1909 by Gertrude Jekyll. This is the most accurately and fully restored of her gardens. The garden consists of a Wild garden where grass paths run amongst rambling roses, shrubs and trees to a planted pond. The Formal garden holds herbaceous borders with colours running from cool colours at either end to hot in the centre, a rose lawn, planted drystone walls, bowing and tennis lawns. This is surrounded by a nuttery, kitchen garden, and orchard with pergolas and arbours.Read More...

At opposite Horse and Groom

GU1 2RG

Merrow Street is off Epsom Road which starts as the A246 out of Guildford (then becomes A25). Merrow street is opposite the Horse and Groom and the car park is immediately on your right once you have turned into Merrow Street. It is a 3 mile walk which is mostly flat across the Clandon estate with its panoramic views, and through West Clandon. There is one downward section that can be quite muddy if there has been a lot of rain so poles are recommended. There are no stiles only gates.
