Science & Technology

The Ash u3a Science & Technology Group has been running for over 10 years and continues for the 2025-2026 session at the Victoria Small Hall, Ash, on the first Friday morning of the month.
There is an Organising Team of:
Bob Ashby – Programme & Talks Co-ordinator
Derek Monds – Registration & Finance admin
Peter Stratford – IT and publicity
Point of Contact: Derek Monds – telephone 01252 337460
To give you an idea of the sort of things covered in our meetings, our 2024-2025 programme included presentations on; “Building & Racing a Caterham Kit Car”, “Aeroponic Farms”, “HS2 – Can it be Resurrected from a National Embarassment?” and “Electricity from Nuclear Fusion”. We also had discussions on “What Can AI Do for You” and “What Keeps the Brain Active in Retirement?”. We rounded off 2025 with our traditional Christmas Quiz.
For 2026, the emphasis continues to be more on Group discussions and shorter presentations by members to ease the load on those volunteering to prepare a topic. Each meeting includes a tea/coffee break for informal discussion and socialising.
Here are the meeting times:
Day: First Friday of the month (except where shown).
Time; From 10:00 to 11:30 am.
Venue; Victoria Small Hall, (rear door on left side), Ash Hill Rd, Ash
Dates; Spring Term 2026 – 2nd Jan, 6th Feb, 6th Mar, no meeting in April.
We are hoping to arrange a visit to the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust museum of aviation – and possibly the historic Wind Tunnel in the coming months. Anyone interested can contact Derek or use the “Contact” web form in the menu at the top of the page to find out more.
The Group is open to anyone interested in technical issues – you don’t have to be an engineer or scientist to attend – in fact we welcome anyone curious to discover more about historical and current milestones in science and technology or simply to find out how and why things work! There is a small charge each term to cover hall hire and refreshments.
Please telephone Derek for more information on who we are and what our meetings are like.
